She is also affectionate toward Brutus and is extremely worried about the well-being of Brutus when he leaves for the Capitol on the day the murder of Julius Caesar was to take place. Introduction-Portia the loyal wife of Brutus has many redeeming factors. She is the daughter of Cato and is highly intelligent. Shakespeare once said “Though those that are betray’d do feel the treason sharply, yet the traitor stands in worse case of woe.” The theme of betrayal plays an important role in literature and Julius Caesar because it is rightfully said that it is easier to forgive an enemy than to forgive a friend. Sometimes the person we’d take a bullet for ends up being the one behind the gun. Just like Caesar, when someone performs something below our expectations, it hurts us. He never imagined that Brutus would betray him and this action left him appalled. The betrayal crushed Caesar completely and hurt him more than the wounds that the daggers of the conspirators. Brutus is betrayed by Cassius and betrays Caesar. The themes around which the play ‘Julius Caesar’ revolves includes the betrayal of trust and friendship. A deceitful act can cost a person something they had worked for over a very long time. Even a hundred apologies can’t build the wall back up. Small mistakes can misplace a few bricks, but betrayal knocks the entire wall down. Trust is a fragile wall that is built brick by brick, but can get shattered easily. But it’s The Public Theatre in New York that finds itself in the biggest controversy, for it’s staging of the play at the Delacorte Theater in Central Parkin 2017, where the director,Oskar Eustis, made Caesar appear obviously Trumpian, giving him recognisably trump-like features like a red tie and a wife with a Slovenian accent. In the play, expectedly, his Caesar got killed by Brutus and the conspirators. This enraged Trump Supporters and caused Delta Air Lines and Bank of America to pull all or part of their sponsorship of the Public Theatre’s free Shakespeare in the Park Program and caused theatre to get heavily criticised.Over the years, there have been many controversial renditions of the play”Julius Caesar”,like one the eve of World War 2,Orson Welles staged an anti-fascist production with a Mussolini-like Caesar and five years ago, the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis production featuring the death of an Obama-likeCaesar was staged by a group of right-wing conspirators.Julius Caesar, being a play with ambition and power at its core, has been heavily scrutinised over the years and has been subject to multiple interpretations and controversies.Due to this, totalitarian governments have over the years banned or censored it and readers and scholars have long since debated the play’s meaning and various interpretations.Shakespeare has evoked a very powerful message through his play – Women must be valued and must be treated equally.Women have started fighting for their rights. In many rural areas women are looked down upon-They are not provided education and are married off at an early age.Earlier, women weren’t even allowed to drive or vote. In many places around the world, women are thought of as inferior and have less rights than men. This leads us to one of the most important problems, even today, in our society.Caesar doesn’t listen even when Calphurnia begs him to stay. She could’ve helped him, but didn’t get the opportunity to. Brutus doesn’t tell his wife what he is going through. They both think of their wives as inferior and are dismissive of their opinions. Both Brutus and Caesar have a traditional thought process. One of these flaws is their complacency, arrogance and underestimating their wives. In the play we see some flaws in the characters of Caesar and Brutus which lead to their downfall.By Anant Veer Bagrodia and Arjunveer Khera
